Yesterday, a superlink truck arrived at our new temporary warehouse in Durban which delivered 32 pallets of maize! They have also committed another 32 pallets of maize.
.
This donation of 70 tons of maize, providing the equivalent of 280,000 nutritious meals, will go a far way towards alleviating food insecurity among thousands of vulnerable beneficiaries in KZN.
.

@foodforwardsa’s foodbanking model uses surplus food as a catalyst for socio-economic development. @ikhayalethemba in Wellington, one of our beneficiary organisations (BOs), collected their monthly provisions of surplus food from our Cape Town warehouse.

Ikhaya le Themba uses our food donations to provide nutritious meals for the children who attend their play dates and youth development sessions as well as adults who benefit from their community -, skills – and enterprise development programmes.

Our 14-ton truck left this morning to make its journey to the Northern Cape, packed with pallets for 15 beneficiary organisations.

These include 10 large community feedings programmes in Kimberley as well as four community feeding programmes and one after-school facility in Upington.

@foodforwardsa does monthly trips to deliver food to our Northern Cape beneficiary organisations, where our BOs meet us at central locations in Kimberley and Upington.
.
Each BO will receive a pallet of non-perishable food items and a pallet of fresh produce. Thank you, @hellochoicesa and @standardbankgrp, for contributing, through your OneFarm Share initiative, to the variety of fresh produce we distribute to our BOs.

Relog, an infrastructure design firm based in Cape Town, did an amazing job by helping us optimise our new Johannesburg and Limpopo warehouse operations. The work by their team of dynamic engineers ensures that we seamlessly move surplus food from where we receive it to where we sort, store and ultimately distribute to our beneficiary organisations so that we can help our most vulnerable communities access nutritious food. We can’t wait for them to help at our new warehouse planned for the Free State too.

A family of four needs to earn R7 800 per month to buy basic groceries costing R2,500.

We’re sad to share that @foodforwardsa has not been spared the unrest, looting and lawlessness taking place in parts of the country.

Our Durban branch that distributes surplus food to our beneficiary organisations in Kwa-Zulu Natal and the Free State to help 125,000 vulnerable people access food has been looted and one of our trucks have been stolen.

Our other branches are on high alert and we will do our best to continue to address food insecurity under very challenging conditions.

@foodforwardsa’s Mobile Rural Depot (MRD) Programme is expanding fast. The programme was launched two years ago to address rural food insecurity. Through our MRD programme we are now serving 19 rural communities across South Africa that collectively reach over 75,000 people.

From condiments, grains, legumes, canned goods and beverages, to toiletries and detergents… our interns in Durban have their hands full sorting and de-facing the amazing donations of mixed stock we receive from @picknpay.

Since starting their internship, our new Durban cohort, Minenhle, Ntokozo and Bongamandla spent three weeks in the warehouse for practical, hands-on training and one week focussing on lectures and assignments. They are learning everything there is to know about foodbanking, warehousing and logistics.

Nhluvuko child Care Centre is one of our newly on-boarded beneficiary organisations. It is an early childhood development centre located in Polokwane, Limpopo, that takes care of 75 children

Our BO coordinator, Lebogang Mashilo, visited them recently to vet their application. “The ECD centre is beautiful, neat and organised inside,” says Lebo. “Since they do not have kitchen resources such as gas cookers, they cook nutritious meals to serve the children in large pots outdoors on wood.”
.
Almost a year ago, on 27 July 2020, we launched our operations in Limpopo, which has become one of our most rapidly growing provinces. We currently provide support to approximately 20,000 vulnerable people through 80 vetted beneficiary organisations (BOs).
.
Due to the critical mass, we are reaching, we will be launching a physical branch in Limpopo in the weeks to come.
.

During Winter, our team members who receive, sort, deface and distribute the surplus food our donors provide us with, especially, are exposed to extreme cold that can be harsh on their skin. They constantly move in and out of our warehouses, come rain or shine.

Do you remember Aunty Frieda whom we paid tribute to on International Women’s Day?

We were lucky to spend some time with her at Frieda’s Day Care, a community creche she started in Springs, where over 100 children attend each day.
.
She sure knows her way around a kitchen and the way into our hearts. She showed us how to make her pickled beetroot. It is quick and easy to make. She boils the beetroot, grates it and makes a vinegar/sugar sauce to pickle it before she serves it.
.
