Hearty, nutritious meals offer our bodies the energy it need and a sense of comfort, especially, to the almost 500,000 vulnerable people who depend on our network of beneficiary organisations (BOs).

In the coming months, as the colder weather starts making its way, this OneFarm Share donation of over 1,008 units of 12.5kg maize meal packets to our Rustenburg branch will help us feed thousands of vulnerable people throughout the North West Province. This equates to 12,600 kg of maize meal received!

Onwards and upwards!

Our Cape Town branch is sad to see our @nissan bakkie go… but we know she is in good hands.
.
Lydia Dipuo Magano, one of @foodforwardsa’s truck drivers, and Charné Kriel, our warehouse manager at our branch in Rustenburg, North West Province, collected this beauty last week from our warehouse in Cape Town. She will now traverse the roads of the North-West Province where our branch is growing and now needs extra vehicle capacity.

Our Rustenburg food heroes work with 73 registered beneficiary organisations (BOs) which collectively serve 29,810 beneficiaries across the North West Province. This includes two of our Mobile Rural Depots (MRDs) which are located in Mahikeng and Klerksdorp. A third MRD in the province will launch in Vryburg soon.

🍏 Monthly collections, from our warehouses in densely populated urban areas.
🍏 Monthly collections, from our Mobile Rural Depots (MRDs) in rural towns or villages.
🍏 Daily collections, from our retail partners in their communities. facilitated through our virtual foodbanking platform, FoodShare.

According to the Social Return on Investment (SROI) Impact Study that @impactamplifier conducted on our foodbanking model, during our 2019/2020 financial year, 76% of FoodForward SA’s BOs collected their donations from our warehouses on a monthly basis and 31% indicated a preference for delivery to their door, noting the cost of travel to our warehouses and wait times as their reasons.

Fruits and vegetables are crucial for optimal human growth and development. They are rich in fibres, vitamins and minerals.

According to the World Health Organization (@who), people should eat a minimum of 400 grams of fruits and vegetables daily, as part of a healthy diet.

Thanks to our partnership with OneFarm Share, @foodforwardsa’s network of over 1,000 registered beneficiary organisations has access to a greater variety of fruits and vegetables which help them feed vulnerable people who participate in their community development programmes.

Thank you, OneFarm Share, for delivering a variety of fresh produce like potatoes, cabbage, tomatoes, pumpkin, carrots, onions, butternut, apples, sweet potato, bananas, beetroot and squash. For the month of March alone, our warehouses received over 190 tons of fresh produce through the initiative!

In South Africa, #foodsafety laws and regulations offer sporadic reference to #food donations. Because there is no clear guidance, quality #surplusfood end in landfill resulting in #foodloss and waste that equates to 10 million tons a year.

Strengthening food donation law and policy can help make a difference.

The Global Food Donation Policy Atlas project is a first-of-its-kind initiative to map the #laws and policies affecting food donation in countries around the world. They identified national laws relating to food donation in 14 countries and analysed the most common legal barriers to greater food donation. @foodforwardsa was part of their research study of which the recommendations were published today.

This project is a collaboration between @harvardflpc (FLPC) and @foodbanking (GFN) with support from the #Walmart Foundation.

Today is World Health Day! The World Health Organisation (@who) regards poor nutrition as the most significant threat to the world’s health and reports that under-nutrition is the single largest killer of children under five years of age (45%).

More than half of FoodForward SA’s beneficiaries are children and over 80% of the food we distribute to our beneficiary organisations is nutritious food. This includes the vegetables we receive as a result of the OneFarm Share partnership.

Every two weeks, locals from Greyton and Genadendal, in the Western Cape, bring their recyclable waste to Greyton Transition Town (GTT), in return for a voucher that they can swap for food, fruit and vegetables, shoes, clothes or stationery. @foodforwardsa’s food provisions form an important component of their efforts and help their Swop Shop to simultaneously address food insecurity and protect our environment.

Diverting surplus food to vulnerable communities is good for our environment too. For every ton of food recovered from the food supply chain, FoodForward SA prevents 4 tons of greenhouse gas emissions from entering our atmosphere.

Residential care facilities like Otshepeng Old Age

Residential care facilities like Otshepeng Old Age Home, located in Tlaseng in the North West Province, deliver the most meals per person, of @foodforwardsa’s network of over 1,000 beneficiary organisations. They offer three meals and a snack per day, seven days a week.

Otshepeng Old Age Home is a live-in centre that offers frail care to 32 elderly residents who cannot take care of themselves. The residents enjoy three meals per day that are prepared in consultation with their doctor and nurses.
.
According to @impactamplifier’s Social Return on Investment (SROI) Impact Study on our foodbanking model, just over half (51%) of FoodForward SA’s beneficiary organisations (BOs) feed up to 100 people per month, while 16% feed more than 1,000 people per month.

Community feeding programmes (19%) and centres for orphaned and vulnerable children (19%) are the most common types of beneficiary organisations registered with @foodforwardsa. The majority of these focus on providing services to children between the ages of 6 to 19 years.

@thesozofoundation offers an after-school tutoring and mentorship programme for 105 high school learners from the Vrygrond (Muizenberg) community. The Sozo Educentre offers a safe space for them to be equipped and empowered and also provides each student with a nutritious meal every day.

South Africa has the largest consumption of peanut butter outside of the US, according to the 2020 South Africa Edible Nuts Manufacturing Report.
.
@foodforwardsa recently received a donation of peanut butter from one of our beneficiary organisations (BOs), @mother.soup.project, located at @woodstockbrewery. Although they received the peanut butter as a donation, it was too much for them and they decided to donate the surplus to us. We received an incredible 14 pallets, totalling 15,1 tons of peanut butter.
.
When NPOs support each other, amazing work gets done. Thank you, Mother Soup. Our BOs across the country have benefited from this generous donation.
.
Except for those suffering from peanut allergy, being high in energy and protein, peanut butter can play an important role in one’s diet.

An independent study conducted by @impactamplifier found that, during our 2019/2020 financial year, 57% of @foodforwardsa’s beneficiary organisations (BOs) provided services that fall under the Youth and Community Development services category.
.
This beneficiary organisation (BO) category includes facilities such as shelters, support groups as well as OVC- and rehabilitation centres. These BOs offer critical support – like, among others, nutritious food, a warm bed to sleep in, emotional support and life skills training – that children and young people need to flourish.
.
Fortress of Refuge, located in Florida in Gauteng, is one of FoodForward SA’s over 1,000 BO’s. They are a large shelter for vulnerable people from, among others, Soweto and Newclare and serve about 400 beneficiaries a day. Fortress of Refuge also aims to equip their beneficiaries with skills training and job placements.
