Partnership in Action: Likusasa Lomama Empowering Communities

In the Eastern Cape, the Department of Social Development established a network of 33 Community Nutrition and Development Centres (CNDCs) to distribute food to vulnerable communities. One of our beneficiary organisations, Likusasa Lomama Community Project, is one of these CNDCs and is located in Kwadwesi Extension in Port Elizabeth in the Eastern Cape.

Likusasa Lomama started out as a stokvel (Umzam’Omhle Women Club). After operating for some time and with aspirations to grow, they started a vegetable garden that sold vegetables to members of the community. Among others, they also managed to form a burial club.

Last year, during their International Day for Eradication of Poverty commemorations, the project was officially handed over to its members. According to Phumla Dyafta, the project’s chairperson, the CNDC is committed to creating opportunities that will enable people to thrive despite the socio-economic challenges they face. Likusasa Lomama promotes greater accessibility to food through understanding and reacting on the community`s vulnerabilities, strengths, opportunities and survival strategies.

Through the partnership with FoodForward SA, Likusasa Lomama was able to reach nearly 400 people each day during the hard lockdown period, offering a healthy nutritious meal, toiletries and sanitary pads to their beneficiaries.

Says Dyafta: “We have become the beacon of hope for the community of KwaDwesi Extension and Ward 36 entirely. During the hard lockdown we were also able to assist two homeless shelters in Uitenhage and Motherwell with two meals a day. We also benefited from the toiletries we received from FoodForward SA. Currently we are feeding community members from Westville informal settlement, Kwadwesi Extension and Joe Slovo. We will never be able to express our gratitude for the partnership with FoodForward SA. It has truly made it easy for us to do the work we love and positively impact on and bring hope to our community.”
