Laura’s Inspiring Story

“It is truly a blessing, honour and a privilege when we witness, on a daily basis, the miracles at The Ark, particularly the transformation bestowed on the lives of our residents and share the experience of Laura who has been with us for the past four years” said Pastor David.

Laura arrived at The Ark with her two children after spending a number of challenging months on the street. “Life for me has not been great for the past seven years, I have been involved in so much mischief which I can’t even begin to tell the world, but I knew that there was more to life than drug abuse and alcohol abuse. With God’s help I applied the necessary discipline and determination to put my life, as well as that of my children back on track. I had to make a conscious decision to start the rehabilitation process.” said Laura. And not only did Laura check herself in, but she has successfully completed The Ark’s restoration programme.

Towards the end of last year, Laura became extremely interested in studying towards an International Diploma in Hospitality with Northlink College. However, Laura didn’t meet the academic admission requirements, let alone those required to apply for a bursary. With assistance and motivation from the Minister Dan Plato’s Office (MEC for Community Safety), Laura was not only accepted by the college, but was awarded a bursary which takes covers all of the course fees.

“I am so grateful for such an opportunity, I am truly blessed. I have a roof over my head, thanks to The Ark and I receive a meal each and every day thanks to the support from FoodBank SA and now I have been afforded the opportunity to study for which I am truly I am grateful. Thank you to everyone for inspiring me to want more in life.”

About The Ark City of Refuge

The Ark City of Refuge opened its doors in 1992 in response to the exceptionally high rate of homelessness and unemployment in the Western Cape.  This organisation is unique in its operations and offerings to its beneficiaries and is the largest of its kind. Since its inception The Ark has assisted over 35,000 people in need. The Ark provides life skills training, a three year Bible School certificate and drug and alcohol rehabilitation.

FoodBank South Africa supports The Ark with nutritious food, detergents, toiletries and infant care products in order for the organisation to feed and provide for its 800 beneficiaries daily. The donations enable The Ark to save on their monthly expenses and use the money saved for developing their facilities and the welfare of their beneficiaries.
