Join the FoodForward SA food recovery revolution

Together with FoodForward SA, you can make a real difference in the lives of hungry South Africans – starting with addressing the food habits in your home.

In South Africa, 10 million tonnes of food go to waste every year. This means that a third of all food produced is never consumed and ends up in rubbish dumps. This waste is in complete contrast to the millions of South Africans that are going hungry daily – more than 14 million people.

FoodForward SA is the catalyst that connects a world of excess to a world of need by recovering edible surplus food in the supply chain. This is why FoodForward SA exists, and here’s how you can get involved:

  1. Financial and food donations

FoodForward SA relies heavily on financial sponsorship and food donations. To become a food or financial partner and help us address hunger, please visit our website. FoodForward SA’s online donation platform is secure and your details will be encrypted. You will receive an email acknowledging your donation, followed by a receipt via post or email, using the details you supply.

  1. Host your own food drive

Companies, schools and individuals across the country are encouraged to get involved by hosting their own food drives. Collect non-perishable food items and donate them to your nearest FoodForward SA branch – every donation makes an impact in the lives of those less fortunate. Establish a small committee to plan and co-ordinate the drive, depending on the size of your food drive.

The most needed food items include:

Rice, maize meal, cereal, samp and pasta
Dried beans, lentils, tinned fish, soya mince and milk powder
Jam, peanut butter and canned mix vegetables
Cooking oil, salt and sugar.

  1. Sponsor a beneficiary organisation

Introduced in 2015 and growing in popularity amongst corporate donors across South Africa, the Beneficiary Organisation Sponsorship Programme gives companies the opportunity to ‘adopt’ one or more of the organisations supported by FoodForward SA.

As we support many types of organisations, this programme allows companies to direct their funding towards an organisation that fits their focus or nearby organisations that they can visit and develop long-term relationships with.

  1. Volunteer

As an individual or group you can volunteer at our events such as Mandela Day Food Drive and packing event, in partnership with Pick n Pay. In 2017 volunteers showed up at selected Pick n Pay stores in Cape Town, Johannesburg, Durban or Port Elizabeth, and encouraged shoppers to buy selected food items and donate them to FoodForward SA. Encouraging your staff and colleagues to spend their 67 minutes with us, to sort and pack the donated food is also an option, or volunteer in our warehouses assisting with sorting and packing food parcels for our beneficiary organisations.

  1. Offer your services

If you have special skills to offer, like writing, photography and graphic design, you could put them to even greater use by helping us out.
