Care facilities for the elderly and frail offer a safe refuge to seniors who are unable to care for themselves. They also ensure that vulnerable elderly regularly access nutritious meals that play an important role in their mental and physical well-being.

By donating to @foodforwardsa, on World Elderly Abuse Awareness Day, you help us deliver nutritious surplus food to 80 aged and frail care facilities across South Africa, enabling us to reach over 30,000 vulnerable elderly people daily.

Cinderella’s pumpkin transformed into a coach. What should the cooks at our beneficiary organisations do with the 20 tons of pumpkin we received from a generous farmer in Robertson?

Our ambassador @jennymorrischef made some yummy spicy bacon and pumpkin fritters:

Ingredients
• 500 g cooked pumpkin mashed roughly
• 1 cup chopped bacon or macon or chopped chicken
• 2 cloves crushed garlic
• 3 Tablespoons chopped coriander
• 2 spring onions with tops chopped
• 1 teaspoon curry powder
• 1 teaspoon ground cumin
• 2 large eggs, beaten
• 1 Cup self raising flour
• Salt to taste
• Oil for frying

Garnish
• Icing sugar for dusting (optional)
• Chopped chives

Method
• Stir all the ingredients together in a mixing bowl
• Heat the oil in a large pan and cook a few spoonfuls of the batter at a time
• Fry till golden on both sides
• Drain on paper towel
• Serve warm

Tip: if the batter is too stiff loosen it with a little milk.

Our very successful food parcel packing events are currently on hold due to Covid, however, there are many other ways you can contribute to our hunger relief efforts.

🍏 Sodexo did a food drive among their Johannesburg employees and donated 255 kg of food.

🍏 Western Cape Smollan staff handed over 300 kg of food to our team in Cape Town.

🍏 The American International School of Cape Town collected 343 kgs of food.

Together, these contributions will enable us to distribute about 4,000 meals to vulnerable beneficiaries.

Has anybody figured out how not to cry when chopping onions? The cooks at our beneficiary organisations are going to need it.

All the way from Limpopo… look at this amazing donation of 22,000 kg of onions we received from @hellochoicesa and @standardbankgrp's OneFarm Share initiative.

Onions are so versatile. They add flavour and texture to a variety of meals. Just imagine all the meals these onions can be used in, from salads and soups to broths and even on sandwiches.

One of our beneficiary organisations, Change Maker

One of our beneficiary organisations, Change Makers Worcester, does amazing work in the Worcester community, whereby they meaningfully reintegrate ex-offenders into society. They provide a platform where young men teach each other various craftwork skills.

Their beautiful craftwork, which is made from, among others, @nestle and @mondelez_international cereal and chocolate boxes, are beautiful examples of upcycling projects, where the crafts made using recyclable materials are sold to help generate an income.
.
Thank you, @nestlesouthafrica_ and Mondelez, and all our donors, for helping us provide regular, quality surplus food to organisations like Change Makers Worcester. Nutritious meals are an integral component of their life-changing skills development programmes.

Our Food Parcel Programme is going national!

To reach even more vulnerable families left destitute because of the #Covid19 #pandemic, we’re now also implementing our #FoodParcelProgramme that was launched three months ago in the #WesternCape in the Northern – and #EasternCape as well as Kwa-Zulu Natal, #Gauteng, #Limpopo, the #FreeState and the #NorthWest.
.
This enables us to deliver 1800 nutritious food boxes per month to the homes of vulnerable people who are unable to visit @foodforwardsa's beneficiary organisations to access food, as well as people who are suffering from, amongst others, Covid-19, TB, HIV/Aids and other acute and chronic illnesses.
.
Thanks to the support of @foodbanking and @picknpay’s @feedthenationsa, through this initiative, we are able to secure #food that helps feed 10,800 people daily.

Did you know that we produce our own @foodforwardsa-labelled tomato jams and - sauces?

When we receive big donations of surplus tomatoes from donors like Rennie Farms, we allocate those that are a bit riper for distribution to @fruitlips_za in Piketberg where it gets transformed into delicious jams and sauces.
.
The children at the aftercare facilities we reach love the jam on their sandwiches and the pasta sauce is perfect for, among others, old-age centres that prepare tomato-based dishes for their residents.
.

On the first day of #YouthMonth, it is our great pleasure to introduce you to our new #YouthInternshipProgramme (YIP) participants.
.
Tania Job (third from right), from @dqstaffingsolutions, an accredited service provider that helps us manage this programme, helped us welcome Kurt Hartzenberg, Michael Ali, Mujaahid Adams, Laiken Job and Masivuye Jali when they reported for duty at our Cape Town warehouse yesterday.
.
They will complete our 6-month @serviceseta-accredited programme that consists of intensive theoretical training and practical training.
.
#YIP was launched in May 2019 in an effort to lower the #supplychain entry barrier and help address the growing problem of #youthunemployment in South Africa. Since the programme’s inception two years ago, we have trained 16 interns and absorbed six into various positions at @foodforwardsa.
.
Thanks to the support of @woolworths_sa, the @idcsouthafrica and our donors, our #Youth Internship Programme enables us to work towards the @unitednations’ Sustainable Development Goal for quality #education (#SDG4).
.
We’ll ask our #interns to share more about their journey with us on social media.

Just look at some of the feedback we received from beneficiaries of our Food Parcel Programme. Launched on 29 January 2021, the initiative is enabling us to deliver 800-1000 food parcels per month to the homes of immune-compromised patients that the Western Cape Department of Health has identified as requiring additional nutritional support.

Sponsored by @picknpay’s @feedthenationsa, each food parcel contains enough non-perishable grocery items, staple food products as well as fresh vegetables to feed a family of four to six people for a period of two to four weeks.

This group of students from @raymhlaba_stc in Gqeberha prepared lunch for the students who visit the centre each day for training in, amongst others, hospitality, beauty and caregiving.

We’re almost halfway there!

By the end of February 2022, we’re hoping to have Mobile Rural Depots (MRD) in 35 rural communities across South Africa, to help more vulnerable people access nutritious food.
.
Ladysmith, about 240 km from our Durban branch, is our 16th Mobile Rural Dept (MRD). Yesterday, four beneficiary organisations joined us at the newly launched MRD to collect the first of their monthly food hampers.
.
@foodforwardsa’s Mobile Rural Depot programme, launched in June 2019, now reaches approximately 72, 200 people residing in rural communities.
.

Jabulile Mkhomazi is the Receiving and Despatch Clerk at our Johannesburg branch. One of her responsibilities is to help check that the @chep_global pallets are packed with the correct amount and type of food (we call this process “picking”) before our beneficiary organisations collect their monthly food provision.

Jabulile and our other 8 team members in Gauteng help 308 registered and vetted beneficiary organisations (BOs) in Gauteng collectively #feed about 135,000 people, daily. They also ensure that surplus food is distributed to our beneficiary organisations in Limpopo and Mpumalanga, via inter-branch transfers to our branches there.
