Engen Helps FoodForward SA Address Rural Food Insecurity

The support from Engen has been a key enabler of the expansion of our Mobile Rural Depot (MRD) Programme, our initiative which address rural food insecurity. As part of their COVID food security support during hard lockdown in 2020, Engen provided FoodForward SA with a generous donation of R1 million towards fuel support for our fleet. This funding was renewed in June 2021, given the impact their support is making towards addressing food insecurity among the most vulnerable communities.

FoodForward SA’s fleet includes 2.5-, 5-, 8- and 14- ton trucks. Our trucks are refrigerated, enabling us to adequately maintain the cold chain during the recovery, storage and distribution of perishable and non-perishable food. While our smaller trucks make daily trips to our supply chain partners to collect surplus food donations, our larger more specialized trucks, like our 14-tonners, are fitted with tail lifts and trailers to make longer distances to distribute food to our beneficiary organisations (BOs) which are part of our MRD programme. Our 14-ton truck stationed at our Cape Town branch does monthly trips to our BOs in Upington, Northern Cape, and the 14-ton truck stationed at our Johannesburg branch does monthly trips to BOs situated as far as Goba, a village in Mpumalanga close to the Mozambican border.

With costs rising so rapidly, we are grateful for our partnership with Engen, whose support make these trips, to distribute nutritious food to vulnerable communities, possible.

“As Engen, we are humbled to partner with FoodForward SA and do our part to help vulnerable communities.  We hope that our fuel contribution will play a small part in ensuring FoodForward SA’s ongoing success. The responsibility to assist the most vulnerable is all of ours. Through our partnership with FoodForward SA, we as Engen hope to help raise awareness around the plight of the hungry in South Africa and also acknowledge that everyone has a role to play,” says Adhila Hamdulay, Engen Corporate Social Investment Manager.
