In South Africa, we have more than 5,000 food and beverage manufacturers, five major grocery retailers, four major fresh produce markets and 27,000 farmers. All of these generate surplus food that often ends up in landfill. This includes, for example, food that is perfectly good for human consumption but has failed to meet strict aesthetic specifications.

To serve nutritious meals, @foodforwardsa’s beneficiary organisations must have the necessary equipment and utensils needed for the preparation of food.
.
During our quarterly, unannounced monitoring visits, our BO coordinators evaluate whether they have the correct cooking facilities and whether the number of beneficiaries they serve match up to their kitchen equipment (especially if they are residential).
.
We recently visited @kidshavenbenoni in Benoni and found their kitchen to be in good working condition. They serve about 50 orphaned and vulnerable children each day and joined our network in Oct 2020.
.

The four pillars of a food-secure nation are availability, access, utilisation and stability (@fao). In South Africa, while food availability is not the main issue, millions of people cannot access food because they have little or no income and as a consequence cannot afford to buy healthy food for sustained health.

On 29 January 2021, @foodforwardsa, in partnership with the Western Cape Government Health and @picknpay’s Feed the Nation Foundation, launched a project to benefit thousands of vulnerable patients with compromised immunity and their families.
.
One of the project’s beneficiaries, during a recent delivery, commented: “This food parcel will go a long way as it will help me a lot. It is difficult with everything that is so expensive. The pension does not cover everything. We suffer. As I’m sitting here, I don’t even have a bread’s money”.
.
Since the launch three weeks ago, we have so far distributed 390 nutritious food parcels to vulnerable patients, benefitting 2,340 people, across the Cape Metropole.

Over 700 people a day benefit from the quality surplus food FoodForward SA supplies to Women for Peace each month.

Women for Peace, situated in Mfuleni in Cape Town, was established in 1976 and is one of @foodforwardsa's over 1,000 beneficiary organisations. They offer, among others, an art and craft skills development program, an afterschool program and a soup kitchen.

We recently visited Mandelaville Crisis Committee

We recently visited Mandelaville Crisis Committee in Roodepoort and were satisfied to see their cupboards stocked with the canned food items, staples and produce we provided them. This food enables Mandelaville Crisis Committee to prepare nutritious meals for about 200 people a day, some of whom enrolled in their skills development programmes.

Quarterly, unannounced visits help @foodforwardsa determine if our beneficiary organisations’ kitchens are operational and stocked with the food we supply to them.
.
Monitoring and evaluating (M&E) is a critical part of FoodForward SA’s measures to monitor compliance, assess our services and determine if the food we distribute reaches the intended beneficiaries.
