To serve nutritious meals, @foodforwardsa’s beneficiary organisations must have the necessary equipment and utensils needed for the preparation of food.
.
During our quarterly, unannounced monitoring visits, our BO coordinators evaluate whether they have the correct cooking facilities and whether the number of beneficiaries they serve match up to their kitchen equipment (especially if they are residential).
.
We recently visited @kidshavenbenoni in Benoni and found their kitchen to be in good working condition. They serve about 50 orphaned and vulnerable children each day and joined our network in Oct 2020.
.

These much-needed groceries are in addition to Tiger Brands’ regular donations of quality surplus food, reinforcing their commitment to promote sustainable consumption and production. The four pillars of a food-secure nation are availability, access, utilisation and stability (@fao). In South Africa, while food availability is not the main issue, millions of people cannot access food because they have little or no income and as a consequence cannot afford to buy healthy food for sustained health.

On 29 January 2021, @foodforwardsa, in partnership with the Western Cape Government Health and @picknpay’s Feed the Nation Foundation, launched a project to benefit thousands of vulnerable patients with compromised immunity and their families.
.
One of the project’s beneficiaries, during a recent delivery, commented: “This food parcel will go a long way as it will help me a lot. It is difficult with everything that is so expensive. The pension does not cover everything. We suffer. As I’m sitting here, I don’t even have a bread’s money”.
.
Since the launch three weeks ago, we have so far distributed 390 nutritious food parcels to vulnerable patients, benefitting 2,340 people, across the Cape Metropole.

Over 700 people a day benefit from the quality surplus food FoodForward SA supplies to Women for Peace each month.

Women for Peace, situated in Mfuleni in Cape Town, was established in 1976 and is one of @foodforwardsa's over 1,000 beneficiary organisations. They offer, among others, an art and craft skills development program, an afterschool program and a soup kitchen.

We recently visited Mandelaville Crisis Committee in Roodepoort and were satisfied to see their cupboards stocked with the canned food items, staples and produce we provided them. This food enables Mandelaville Crisis Committee to prepare nutritious meals for about 200 people a day, some of whom enrolled in their skills development programmes.

Quarterly, unannounced visits help @foodforwardsa determine if our beneficiary organisations’ kitchens are operational and stocked with the food we supply to them.
.
Monitoring and evaluating (M&E) is a critical part of FoodForward SA’s measures to monitor compliance, assess our services and determine if the food we distribute reaches the intended beneficiaries.

Our staff are ready to distribute this week’s nutritious food parcels. The parcels are the result of a partnership with the Western Cape Government Health and @picknpay’s Feed the Nation Foundation.

Food parcels containing various grocery items, including staples and fresh vegetables will be distributed to patients and their families in need of food. Food parcels are delivered directly to patients' homes. The programme will grow in the coming weeks, which will see more than 2500 parcels packed weekly across the country so that food-insecure families get the food they need to survive.

Divine Life Restoration Centre is one of the latest beneficiary organisations that have joined @foodforwardsa’s network. They run a community feeding programme that serves 240 people, including children and adults, each day and attended the launch of our latest Mobile Rural Depot (MRD) in Komani.

In addition to helping feed hungry community members, they have also recently launched a youth skills centre.

In October 2020, @mastercardmea partnered with @picknpay’s Feed the Nation and @foodforwardsa to launch a “Click to Feed” initiative. Every time a customer pays(d) for their Pick n Pay online shop (www.pnp.co.za) using their Mastercard, 30 meals were donated to FoodForward SA. At the end of the campaign, an incredible 2 million meals were donated!

This generous donation has made a significant and meaningful contribution to FoodForward SA’s food security programmes and comes at a critical time. In 2021, we will be reaching more vulnerable beneficiaries especially those affected by the Covid-19 pandemic. We will also be gaining significant traction on our Mobile Rural Depot programme, to reach more vulnerable rural communities.
