Food donations redirect safe, surplus food, that w Food donations redirect safe, surplus food, that would otherwise be lost or wasted, onto the plates of those who need it most. . To help governments and food supply chain actors understand the role of surplus food in food security, @foodbanking (GFN) and @harvardflpc (FLPC) selected 14 countries, including South Africa, to participate in The Global Food Donation Policy Atlas. . We are honoured to have participated in this global study. The results were published last week. Among others, they highlighted which of the participating countries have strong, weak or no food donation policies. . Lydia Dipuo Magano, one of @foodforwardsa’s truck drivers, and Charné Kriel, our warehouse manager at our branch in Rustenburg, North West Province, collected this beauty last week from our warehouse in Cape Town. She will now traverse the roads of the North-West Province where our branch is growing and now needs extra vehicle capacity. . Our Rustenburg food heroes work with 73 registered beneficiary organisations (BOs) which collectively serve 29,810 beneficiaries across the North West Province. This includes two of our Mobile Rural Depots (MRDs) which are located in Mahikeng and Klerksdorp. According to the World Health Organization (@who), people should eat a minimum of 400 grams of fruits and vegetables daily, as part of a healthy diet. . The type of food we distribute to our beneficiary organisations (BOs) depends on: 🍏 the number and age profile of the beneficiaries our BOs serve and 🍏 the food donations we receive from our food supply chain partners. . Twenty-one percent (21%) of the food we distributed during FoodForward SA’s 2019/2020 financial year included canned foods that comprised of, among others, tinned fish, beans, vegetables and soups. Grains and cereals made up 20% and fresh fruits 11% of our monthly food provisions. . Because there is no clear guidance, quality #surplusfood end in landfill resulting in #foodloss and waste that equates to 10 million tons a year. . Strengthening food donation law and policy can help make a difference. . The Global Food Donation Policy Atlas project is a first-of-its-kind initiative to map the #laws and policies affecting food donation in countries around the world. They identified national laws relating to food donation in 14 countries and analysed the most common legal barriers to greater food donation. @foodforwardsa was part of their research study of which the recommendations were published today. . Residential care facilities like Otshepeng Old Age Residential care facilities like Otshepeng Old Age Home, located in Tlaseng in the North West Province, deliver the most meals per person, of @foodforwardsa’s network of over 1,000 beneficiary organisations. They offer three meals and a snack per day, seven days a week. . Otshepeng Old Age Home is a live-in centre that offers frail care to 32 elderly residents who cannot take care of themselves. The residents enjoy three meals per day that are prepared in consultation with their doctor and nurses. . The majority of these focus on providing services to children between the ages of 6 to 19 years. . @thesozofoundation offers an after-school tutoring and mentorship programme for 105 high school learners from the Vrygrond (Muizenberg) community. The Sozo Educentre offers a safe space for them to be equipped and empowered and also provides each student with a nutritious meal every day. . South Africa has the largest consumption of peanut butter outside of the US, according to the 2020 South Africa Edible Nuts Manufacturing Report. . @foodforwardsa recently received a donation of peanut butter from one of our beneficiary organisations (BOs), @mother.soup.project, located at @woodstockbrewery. Although they received the peanut butter as a donation, it was too much for them and they decided to donate the surplus to us. We received an incredible 14 pallets, totalling 15,1 tons of peanut butter. . When NPOs support each other, amazing work gets done. Thank you, Mother Soup. Our BOs across the country have benefited from this generous donation. .
