Celebrate World Food Day: Your Donations Can Help Us Pack Essential Meals for Those in Need

Food is not just a necessity; it’s a fundamental human right, ranking just behind air and water in importance.

Yet, in South Africa, over 30 million people lack access to healthy, nutritious food, and an alarming 10 million tonnes of edible food end up in landfills each year. Globally, more than 700 million people face food insecurity due to climate change, struggling economies, and inequality, as reported by the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).

World Food Day, commemorated on October 16, marks the founding of the UN’s Food and Agriculture Organization in 1945. This year’s theme, “Right to Food for a Better Life and Future,” highlights the urgent need to address food insecurity and malnutrition, which remain significant challenges in many parts of the world, including South Africa.

In support of this important cause, we’re gearing up for our annual World Food Day packing event. This day unites our corporate sponsors and beneficiary organisations to pick, pack, and distribute a total of 150 pallets of nutritious food which will be distributed to our BOs around the country.

With no government funding, FoodForward SA relies entirely on the generosity of individuals and companies to help us provide daily meals to nearly 1 million beneficiaries through our 2,500 beneficiary organisations (BOs).

Here’s how you can get involved:

During October we will be hosting a food drive to prepare for World Food Day. Our goal is to pack enough food for more than 1.8 million meals. We invite you to host your own food drive and contribute to our efforts by collecting and donating the following grocery items:
