Our volunteer programme at FoodForward SA runs throughout the year, allowing participants to roll up their sleeves and actively participate in our mission to fight food insecurity and malnutrition.
Volunteers gain first-hand experience in our foodbanking model, warehouse operations, and various strategic programmes.
We host a range of individuals, companies, schools and universities. Volunteers can sign up on our website and join any of our branches nationwide for a two-hour session including a tour of the warehouse, followed by food sorting, picking, and packing activities.
Volunteers at our Cape Town branch can also test their green fingers by planting seeds in our food tunnel, as part of our Food Gardens Connect (FGC) programme.
Get Hands-On Experience and Join our Mission
We recently hosted students from Stellenbosch University’s Human Nutrition Department who, as part of their curriculum, spent a few hours at our Cape Town warehouse enthusiastically sorting and packing groceries destined for our various beneficiary organisations.
Here’s what some of the students had to say about their experience:
Mikayla Kruger: “This experience is part of our third-year Dietetics curriculum. We came to understand how a food banking system operates and see first-hand how FoodForward SA (FFSA) works to reduce hunger. It’s amazing to witness the scale and impact of FFSA on communities across South Africa. It’s incredibly moving to see the difference being made in people’s lives.”
Natasha Ludik: “It’s fascinating to see how FFSA integrates into the food system and provides a solution to what people call food waste, but is good quality food. I had heard about FFSA before coming here but didn’t fully grasp the extent of their impact. Seeing it in action is truly impressive.”
Abbey Hatton: “Witnessing FFSA’s national reach and partnerships with all the major retailers and manufacturers is amazing. It’s inspiring to see how much care and effort go into fighting hunger. The work being done here, especially the provision of nutritious food to communities, is remarkable.”
We recently hosted volunteer groups from the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Sports Arts and Culture in, Walt Disney in Cape Town and Johannesburg and McCain.
If your company, school or university would like to volunteer at one of our warehouses around the country, email us at info@foodforwardsa.org to book a session.
Let’s work together to combat food insecurity and malnutrition in South Africa!
