Empowering Persons with Disabilities: Chris Steytler Industries’ Journey with FoodForward SA

Chris Steytler Industries for the disabled is a beacon of hope and empowerment dedicated to enriching the lives of people with disabilities

Established in 1983 with just 10 trainees, the Bellville-based organisation, now has over 140 trainees as part of its ongoing rehabilitation programme.

At its core, Chris Steytler Industries aims to demonstrate the value and capabilities of persons with disabilities in the workforce.

Empowering Persons with Disabilities Through Work Rehabilitation

By providing work rehabilitation opportunities, the organisation equips its trainees with the necessary skills and aptitudes to pursue employment in the open labour market. For those who require continued support, Chris Steytler Industries offers an environment where they can thrive and grow.

“Those individuals that are not able to cope in open labour market environments remain with our organisation to maintain their level of function and provide them with the opportunity to grow and succeed in a supportive environment,” says Sharne Mostert, an administrator at Chris Steytler Industries.

“Our trainees engage in diverse tasks such as contract packaging, assembly, recycling, and more, demonstrating confidence and precision in their work.”

In July 2023, Chris Steytler Industries became a beneficiary organisation of FoodForward SA (FFSA). This partnership enables them to provide nutritious meals to a larger group of participants.

Previously limited, the feeding programme now includes daily warm breakfasts and cooked lunches, vital for the health and well-being of their trainees who rely on these meals due to regular medication needs.

“Many of our participants need to take regular medication and ensuring that we can provide a hearty meal is beneficial to their health. We have seen an increase in attendance and general improvement in behaviour and wellbeing,” Sharne adds.

The collaboration between Chris Steytler Industries and FFSA highlights the power of partnerships in creating sustainable social impact.

Through initiatives like these, FoodForward SA remains committed to fostering a more inclusive society where every individual, regardless of ability, can achieve their fullest potential.
