FoodForward SA Releases 2022/2023 Annual Report

We are very excited to release our latest Annual Report, which highlights our key activities and social impact for the period 1 March 2022 to 28 February 2023.

Promoting the SDGs

With just seven years to go, and with most countries not on track to reach their SDG 2030 goals, there is an urgent need to implement programmes that promote progress. Our foodbanking model of timeously intercepting edible surplus food across the food system and redistributing this good food to food-insecure communities across the country, directly promotes SDG 2 (Zero Hunger), SDG 12

(Responsible Production and Consumption), and SDG 13 (Climate

Action), by reducing food loss and waste across the food system.

Measurable impact

During the financial year, we distributed a total of 22,120 tons of nutritious food, equivalent to the delivery of 88,480,000 meals. The diversion of this food resulted in a saving of 115,024 tons of CO2e, an increase of 139% compared to last year.

A highlight of the past financial year was the launch of our Petition for Food Donation Regulations (Repurpose the Surplus campaign), which garnered around 10,000 signatures in less than six months. FoodForward SA has been a thought leader in the ongoing discussions with various government departments around the regulatory landscape for food donations.

A reflection from our MD, Andy Du Plessis: “The year-end results reflect an organisation that is steadily growing in reach and impact, along with a strategic focus that responds meaningfully to the needs of vulnerable communities, a steadfast commitment to reduce food loss and waste and its impact on our fragile planet, and a resolve to work collaboratively to increase access to nutritious surplus food to those who need it.

Thank you to all our caring and generous food and financial donors for investing in the future of our country, and for partnering with FoodForward SA to contribute to realising this vision.”
