On Friday, 14 October in commemoration of World Food Day, we had the pleasure of launching our new fit-for-purpose foodbanking facility in Cape Town, Western Cape. This auspicious occasion was celebrated with our donors, partners, board members, and guest of honor, Premier Alan Winde. Guests were taken on a tour of our new facilities, followed by a light lunch prepared by our ambassador chef, Jenny Morris.
Our new premises which see our warehouse and head office all under one roof will allow us to innovatively address food insecurity as it allows for larger warehouse space and larger cold chain facilities.
Here’s a virtual tour of our facility.
This milestone celebration further saw the launch of our food donations policy petition. As part of our Repurpose the Surplus campaign, where we have been creating awareness around surplus foods, we launched a petition for the implementation of a food donations policy in South Africa. Our goal is to get 100 000 signatures in order for our petition to be considered in parliament. We have been working closely with the Consumer Goods Council of South Africa, Global FoodBanking Network and Harvard Law school food clinic on draft recommendations for a food donations policy in South Africa. With a food donations policy in place, FoodForward SA will be able to recover more surplus foods from the supply chain and be in a position to feed even more people daily. We are calling on you to support our call for a food donations policy.
