FoodForward SA established the Mobile Rural Depot (MRD) programme in 2019 to effectively address food insecurity in rural villages and towns across South Africa. Our growing fleet enables us to recover more food on demand and travel to more rural communities to deliver essential nutritious food provisions for those in need.
With food prices continuing to rise, many low-income households, those that are unemployed and those depending on social grants, continue to feel the pressure to afford nutritious food every month. We have stepped in and expanded our rural reach with the addition of two new MRDs – in eMbalenhle, a township in Mpumalanga and Makapanstad, a village in the North West. Apart from the new MRDs, FoodForward SA’s MRD programme also operates in other areas in these regions such as Emalahleni, Goba (a town close to the Mozambican border), Mafikeng, Klerksdorp and Taung.
Thanks to our partnership with Engen which covers our fuel costs, every month our refrigerated trucks deliver nutritious food provisions to close to 600 registered and vetted beneficiary organisations that provide nearly 190,000 beneficiaries with a daily meal. Our MRD enables many of our BOs to save on transport costs.
