FoodForward SA expands its footprint into the Northern Cape

We expanded our footprint to the Northern Cape in July 2021 with our first MRD launching in De Aar, followed by Upington shortly thereafter. As a result of the rapid growth of our support to beneficiary organisations in the Northern Cape, we officially launched our 8th warehouse in Kimberley, Northern Cape on 16 August 2022.

23 of our beneficiary organisations that previously received their monthly food allocation through our Mobile Rural Depot programme joined us at this significant occasion and were able to collect their food directly from the warehouse. Our Northern Cape branch currently reaches just over 40 000 beneficiaries through 65 of our member beneficiary organization. For the time being the branch will be operational two days a week allowing beneficiary organisations to save on travelling costs and collect their food allocations from our warehouse instead of the MRD’s in neighbouring towns.

Statistics South Africa’s 2021 General Household survey reports that 59,5% of households in the Northern Cape depend on social grants as their main source of income while 25.8% of households have inadequate food access. This was evident in the number of people in addition to our invited guests that attended our launch, wanting to register as beneficiary organisations on the day.  Our BO Department has been inundated with requests for membership. Thanks to our partnership with the Global Food Banking Network, we were able to expand in the Northern Cape and can now assist thousands more vulnerable people in the region.
