Social grants remain a vital safety net, particularly in the poorest of provinces. Statistics South Africa’s 2021 General Household survey reports that 59.5% of households in the Northern Cape depend on social grants as their main source of income, while 25,8% of households have inadequate food access.
Across the Northern Cape, FoodForward SA provides monthly nutritious food provisions to 65 registered beneficiary organisations (BOs) that serve, among others, orphans and vulnerable children, indigent people, the disabled, the aged, and pre-schoolers. These organisations, located in Britstown, Colesburg, De Aar, Kimberley, Galeshewe, Prieska and Upington collectively feed thousands of vulnerable people.
This new branch addition is in line with FoodForward SA’s five-year plan to scale its operations, includes reaching 1 million people and having a warehouse in all nine provinces by 2024. As a result of the rapid growth of our support to Beneficiary Organisations (BOs) in the Northern Cape, we are very excited to be opening our eighth branch in Kimberly.
Our expansion to the Northern Cape has been made possible through generous funding from Global FoodBanking Network (GFN). Thank you for your support and for partnering with us, as we expand our footprint in this province to reach more vulnerable people.
