The OneFarm Platform was initiated by the Standard Bank Group as a digital business-to-business programme to connect and provide services across the agricultural ecosystem. To help sustain farming operations in the country during the COVID-19 lockdowns, Standard Bank and HelloChoice – a digital marketplace that connects fresh produce direct from farm to the buyer – launched the OneFarm Share platform. Through Standard Bank’s CSI funding, they purchase surplus fresh produce from emerging farmers, which ordinarily would have been ploughed back into the land or dumped. This provides farmers with financial support while re-directing good quality surplus food to feed vulnerable people and helping to save the environment.
Using FoodForward SA’s Durban branch to test the operational feasibility of the platform, OneFarm Share commenced as a pilot project in November 2020, after which it rolled out nationally to all FoodForward SA branches from February 2021. FoodForward SA is one of the distribution partners of the platform.
Through OneFarm Share, over 7,000 tons of produce from 327 contributing farmers have been distributed.
FoodForward SA distributes pallets of fresh produce and other nutritious food to beneficiary organisations at a Mobile Rural Depot
What makes this partnership so valuable for FoodForward SA is that it significantly increases the nutritious content of the food basket we provide our beneficiary organisations (BOs). Our BOs are also delighted about the variety of fresh produce they receive. For example, since the launch of the platform, our BOs have received 41 different types of fresh produce, ranging from potatoes, butternut and onions to beetroot, amadumbe, green peppers, aubergine, watermelon and pineapples. Through our rural footprint and in particular, our Mobile Rural Depot (MRD) programme, the OneFarm Share platform is benefitting thousands of people in rural communities, where hunger and poverty are most rife.
