Quantum Partners with FoodForward SA to support vulnerable rural communities

Quantum is a diversified feeds and poultry business providing quality animal feeds and poultry products to South African and selected African markets and is the largest producer of eggs in South Africa. Responsible corporate citizenship, social responsibility, sound business practice and natural resource management are fundamental to Quantum’s sustainability. The company strives to positively impact the communities in which they operate, including vulnerable rural areas, and with the strong focus on waste reduction, the partnership with FoodForward SA was a natural fit.

In 2017, Quantum’s partnership with FoodForward SA (FFSA) started with the company sponsoring some of the beneficiary organisation’s (BOs) membership fees. FFSA supports a network of vetted and registered BOs that receive monthly provisions of groceries and fresh produce. The BOs use the food items to cook nutritious meals for the people they serve. These include the elderly and frail, vulnerable women, children, at-risk youth, disabled people and people with chronic diseases.

FFSA BOs pay a nominal monthly membership fee, which helps cover the operational costs of the recovery, sorting, storage and distribution of surplus food. The fee is determined by the size of a BO, for example, an ECD pays R200 a month, which ensures they receive a minimum tonnage of about 150 kg. This tonnage has an average retail value in excess of R6,000 per month.

Says Heather Pether, Executive: Human Resources at Quantum: “Food security is a basic human need. At Quantum Foods we are extremely privileged to partner with FoodForward SA who is so actively involved in feeding the hungry and making a difference in peoples’ lives.”
