FoodForward SA’s support helps to empower centres for orphaned and vulnerable children

FoodForward SA supports a network of beneficiary organisations, including those that care for vulnerable children. LIV-Village located in Cottonlands, Kwa-Zulu Natal, is one of our large beneficiary organisations that provides daily nutritious meals to nearly 250 orphans and vulnerable children. The organisation started in 1997 when Tich Smith, founder of LIV, had the vision to build a village for children who need a safe home, a mother to love them, food to eat, and a school to educate them.

Last month, we went on a tour of the village and visited their ECD centre, medical facility, therapy gym and on-site pantry. We also spent some time with one of the families who showed us around their cluster home. These homes house nearly 250 children ranging between the ages of one month up to 18 years old. Each house has a family of up to six children with a ‘house mother’, ensuring that they are well fed and taken care of. It was so heartwarming to see that the grocery items and fresh produce collected from our KZN warehouse had been unpacked, sorted and neatly stored in the pantry. The house mothers and children visit the on-site pantry where they “shop” for groceries for breakfast, lunch, and supper for the week. It is incredible to see that LIV creates a space of normalcy for these vulnerable children.

To the LIV team, thank you for teaching each child the value of family life in a loving home and village community, while giving them a sense of belonging and purpose. We salute you!
