First Community Resource Centre (FCRC) is a non-profit organization located in Hanover Park, Cape Town. Their mission is poverty alleviation through the provision of counselling targeted at members of the community, youth influenced by gangsterism and drugs as well as abused and neglected children.
We recently visited the kitchen of FCRC and chatted to the head cook, Charmaine Johnson, who has been cooking for the community for over seven years. “I love to cook and if you are cooking for the community you must cook with love, dignity and respect”, she says.
FCRC runs a feeding scheme that includes feeding people who are on chronic medication, delivering food to the elderly using the delivery bicycles based at the centre, providing food parcels to poverty-stricken homes in the area, as well as providing a daily meal to at-risk youth attending the programmes held at the centre.
The FCRC is dedicated to helping the community, serving as an elevating influence to encourage people to also uplift and develop themselves. They also appoint qualified personnel who focus on social development through the following programmes, e.g. food security, CeaseFire project, after-school programme, computer literacy classes, support groups, counselling sessions, career guidance, seniors club.
Thank you to the team at FCRC for facing the constant challenges that arise in the community and providing a sense of home for those in need.
“Thank you FoodForwad SA for the support that you provide to the families in our community. Irrespective of what they don’t have, they can just sit around a table and share a meal together, that’s huge!” says Imelda, volunteer and facilitator at First Community Resource Centre.
