World Food Day 2021 on 16 October is commemorated around the world to raise awareness of the scourge of global hunger. For the third successive year, FoodForward SA showcased the importance of World Food Day and its theme – Our Actions are our Future – through food packing activations at our Rustenburg, Cape Town, Johannesburg and Durban branches.

Our donors helped us pack 1,320 food parcels, equating 33 tons, which will provide an incredible 132,000 meals. Through our Household Food Security Programme, these nutritious food parcels are destined for vulnerable households where the recipients have been assessed and identified by social workers, dietitians, nurses and other healthcare workers.

The Household Food Security Programme, launched on World Food Day, is a key component of FoodForward SA’s integrated food security strategy to reach vulnerable individuals such as malnourished children, pregnant and lactating women and child-headed households. Each food box weighs an average of 25kg and contains staple food items such as:
- Tinned food (pilchards, baked beans)
- Rice
- Maize
- Cooking oil
- Peanut butter
- Soup mix
- Lentils
- Sugar
- Fresh fruit and vegetables.
The box provides for four to six people and lasts two to four weeks. The programme has an ambitious target to reach 15,000 vulnerable households (100,000 individuals) by February 2022.
