Due to the success of the food relief project we launched with the Western Cape Department of Health and Pick n Pay’s Feed the Nation Foundation and increasing food insecurity among households as a consequence of the Covid-19 pandemic, we’ve decided to roll out our food parcel programme for vulnerable individuals nationally.
Beneficiary organisations (BOs) that have a national footprint and which have the staff resources such as social workers to select and verify eligible individuals and their households, will form part of our national food intervention programme. These BOs offer critical healthcare -, skills development -, rehabilitation – and elderly and disability care services. Some also work with orphans and vulnerable children as well as the homeless and needy.
Since the food parcel project was launched on 29 January 2021, we have distributed approximately 2,500 food parcels consisting of non-perishable grocery items, staple food products and fresh vegetables to vulnerable beneficiaries. This enabled 170,000 meals.
The national food parcel programme will see FFSA distribute about 1,000 food parcels per month, nationally.
