An alarming number of youths are struggling to find employment. As a role player in the NPO sector, helping create decent work and economic growth (Sustainable Development Goal No.8 of the United Nations), is also important to FoodForward SA.
In 2020, the Industrial Development Corporation (IDC) donated R740,000 to FoodForward SA to support our Youth Internship Programme (YIP). This donation aligned with their objective of supporting community projects that contribute towards youth development and job creation in previously disadvantaged communities.
The IDC’s donation helped FoodForward SA expand our SETA-accredited Youth Internship Programme which launched in May 2019. The six-month internship, targeting unemployed youth, comprises alternating blocks of theoretical work (30%) and practical training (70%) in warehousing, supply chain and logistics.
The first group of interns, assigned to our Cape Town warehouse, completed their internship in October 2019. The second, also based in Cape Town, completed their training in July 2020. The third group was assigned to our Johannesburg warehouse and completed their training in August 2020.
We are very proud of our interns whom are slowly but surely becoming permanent FoodForward SA employees. Sonelisiwe Copiso was the first of the inaugural cohort to receive permanent employment at FFSA. Initially, she was employed as a general worker. Due to the potential she displayed for growth, she has been promoted to Warehouse Supervisor of our Gqeberha (formerly Port Elizabeth) branch.
FoodForward SA also permanently employed Dylan Simpson (Cohort 1), Thozama Botha (Cohort 2) and Bukhosi Kontsiwe (Cohort 2) as general workers at our Cape Town warehouse. Michaela Rix (Cohort 1) works in our national office and assists our finance and operations departments.
Jabulile Mkhomazi (Cohort 3) was appointed as Receiving & Dispatch Clerk in Johannesburg and Thobekile Mthembu fulfils the same position at our Durban warehouse.
Woolworths has also been a proud supporter of our Youth Internship Programme, with a portion of their annual grant supporting the programme. Thank you, IDC and Woolworths for your generosity and tremendous support in helping us to address youth unemployment!
FoodForward SA’s Youth Internship Programme will commence again on 31 May 2021. Email Charlene Richings at email@example.com to learn more about our application criteria.
