Pick n Pay Leads the Way

FoodForward SA’s partnership with Pick n Pay started more than 11 years ago, when the retailer, though Suzanne Ackerman-Berman, was one of the founding members of FoodForward SA. PnP has been our top food donor all these years, providing quality surplus food directly from their distribution centres, as well as via their stores using our FoodShare digital platform, allowing our beneficiary organisations to collect food daily from PnP stores across the country.

For 2020, PnP donated nearly 800 tons of quality surplus food to FFSA, enabling us to distribute 3,2 million meals. FFSA has also been a beneficiary of the retailer’s Smart Shopper programme. Our national Mandela Day Food Drive, FoodForward SA’s national flagship event, is successful because of PnP. In 2019, the Mandela Day food drive campaign raised over 160 tons of food, which enabled FFSA to have sufficient food to distribute over the winter months.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we could not hold this event in 2020. Instead, PnP selected FFSA as one of the beneficiaries of their Feed the Nation campaign, donating R1 million to FFSA through this campaign. PnP staff also included FFSA as one of the beneficiaries of their staff payroll programme and to date the amazing staff have donated nearly R300,000 to FFSA!

Thank you, PnP for your generous partnership which allows us to address food insecurity in a meaningful way.
