The Covid-19 pandemic is a health and human crisis threatening global food security and economic development. In South Africa, one in four people go hungry daily.
In May 2020, as part of their COVID-19 food security support, Massmart pledged to provide FoodForward SA with a donation of 460 tons procured quality food. This generous donation was made possible through Walmart International, which matched financial contributions from the Massmart board and executive committee. We received the last donation in December 2020.
Since Massmart is a subsidiary of Walmart, and given their strict anti-corruption policies, the selection of FoodForward SA as a beneficiary of this generosity was done once we had passed their strict due diligence checks. Their donation translates into two million nutritious meals.
FoodForward SA would not be able to work towards its vision of a South Africa without hunger, without corporate partnerships such as these. The United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goal 17 (Partnerships for the Goals) remains even more critical at this time.
