Each year, on World Food Day, 16 October, we get to share our passion and commitment to ending hunger with some of our top corporate partners. Although our efforts were limited due to the Covid-19 pandemic, we were honoured to host teams from Investec Wealth & Investment, Engen, FNB volunteers, PepsiCo (Simba), The Institute of Risk Management South Africa (IRMSA) and Nedbank.
Each team at our Cape Town and Johannesburg warehouses had an hour in which to inspect, sort and pack 60 food boxes containing much-needed staple and non-perishable food items, as well as sanitary products.
The corporate volunteers got their heads sweaty, hands “dirty” and hearts warmed by helping to pack a total of 360 food boxes. The teams’ efforts helped distribute an amazing 31,680 meals to our beneficiaries.
To make the day even more special, we were treated to a surplus food cooking demonstration at our Cape Town warehouse by top celebrity chefs Jenny Morris and Pete Goffe-Wood. Who knew that surplus food could taste so delicious! A warm welcome to Chef Pete, who now joins Jenny Morris, Justin Bonello, Jamie Rowntree, Sarah Graham and Bryan Habana as FFSA’s brand ambassadors.
We are grateful to our food suppliers – Nestle (21 pallets of Maggi Noodles), Tiger Brands (171 pallets of canned food), Denny Mushrooms (6 tons of mushrooms), and Peninsula Beverages (20 pallets of water) – who provided us with additional donations in commemoration of World Food Day.
A big thank you to Peninsula Beverages and Coca Cola Beverages South Africa for sponsoring us with ice-cold refreshments for our food heroes and volunteers. Thank you, also, to Libra Vision, for sponsoring their videography services and for capturing some of the special moments at our Cape Town warehouse.
