In April 2019, Managing Director Andy Du Plessis launched FoodForward SA’s five-year plan to scale up its operations. This ambitious plan included reaching 1 million people and having a footprint in all nine provinces by 2024.
Who would have thought that on 15 October 2020 we would undertake our maiden journey to Mpumalanga to expand our footprint into all nine provinces?
The day before World Food Day 2020, FoodForward SA distributed nutritious food hampers to nine beneficiary organisations (BOs) serving, among others, orphans and vulnerable children, indigent people, the disabled, pre-schoolers and vulnerable high school learners. The organisations, located in Vlakbult, Mbombela, Mbangwane, Mkhondo, Embalenhle and Kwamhlanga, collectively feed over 4,300 vulnerable people.
For now, we will undertake monthly trips using inter-branch transfers from our Johannesburg warehouse to transport food to drop-off points in White River, Mkhondo and Embalenhle.
Our expansion to Mpumalanga has been made possible through generous funding from the FirstRand SPIRE Fund and Kellogg’s. We are grateful to these donors for their support and for partnering with us, as we expand our footprint in this province to feed more vulnerable people. We will explore the feasibility of establishing a permanent branch once we have built up a critical mass of BOs and supply chain partners in the province.
