South Africa is a great country with enormous potential, despite the myriad challenges we face. We are tough; we can laugh even while facing adversity; several SA based NPOs (including FoodForward SA) and corporates have won international awards and recognition for our innovative work in several fields including science, engineering, academia, ICT, and the charity sector etc. South Africans live with an inimitable hope that things will get better.

And, we can certainly do better. We have to. Since food is the most basic human need, we must ensure that poor people have better access to food so that they can be nourished, which allows them to be able to learn, become healthy, and have the strength to work or find work etc.

It is exactly for this reason that FoodForward SA’s board took the bold decision to adopt a five-year plan to increase our impact to reach 1 million people daily through a network of 2,000 Beneficiary Organisations (BOs).

FoodForward SA’s Foodbanking model is a great multiplier to help us achieve this goal. We receive good quality edible surplus food from our generous supply chain partners. We redistributed this food to a broad range of charities nationally that turn this good food into meals. Here are some interesting results:

  • It costs FoodForward SA R0,84 (indicative) to facilitate the delivery of one meal.
  • All the food is within date, of a very good quality, and of a great variety, making it easy for BOs to prepare meals.
  • We distributed 5,115 tons of food during the year – a 22% y/y increase.
  • Of the total tonnage, 80,25% was nutritious food.
  • We unlocked 20,460,000 meals over the course of the year – an increase of 20% y/y.
  • The estimated retail value of the food we distributed is R231 million.
  • We served 670 BOs (26% increase y/y) who collectively prepare meals for 255,000 people daily.
  • More than 75% of our BOs offer community services that promote early childhood development, education, skills development, and care for abused women and children.
  • By recovering surplus food, we saved 20,600 tons of greenhouse gas emissions from being emitted into the atmosphere.
  • Our model promotes 11 of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including SDG 1: Ending Poverty; SDG 2: Ending Hunger; and SDG 12: Sustainable Consumption and Production.

For every R1 spent on running costs, we were able to unlock R13,49 worth of retail quality food.

The economic and social value of our model makes it hard to ignore as an impactful food security intervention at scale.

The Verdict: Not a bad set of results, despite operating in a tough economic climate. I am pleased to say that we are well on our way to achieving our five-year goal.
