On World Food Day (16 October) hundreds of people in Cape Town and Johannesburg showed their support for FoodForward SA and the work that we do to ensure that thousands of people across South Africa are fed daily.
From 13-16 October, FoodForward SA, in partnership with Checkers, held a food drive in Blue Route Mall in Cape Town and Mall of Africa in Johannesburg to collect non-perishable food for distribution to various organisations including orphanages, old aged homes, homes for the disabled, shelters for abused women and children and youth development centres.
The aim of the food drive was not only to collect food for the less fortunate, but also to raise awareness about the plight of the hungry in South Africa and the dire need for South Africans to get involved.
“We are extremely grateful to the public for showing their support and for giving back in this manner. With around 25% of our population living without the security of regular meals, and 40% to 60% of South Africans not able to afford healthy and nutritious food, World Food Day for us was a day to highlight just how huge the problem is and to encourage people to unite in the fight against hunger”, said Andy Du Plessis, Managing Director for FoodForward SA.
Thanks to Checkers and various print, online and radio media partners, this event was a success and FoodForward SA commends them for being committed to making a real difference.
FoodForward SA would also like to thank all our volunteers who assisted on the day at the shopping malls as well as the photographers who captured the gees of the day on a pro bono basis.
