United in the fight against hunger

In celebration of Mandela Day on 18 July, FoodBank SA joined forces with 1, 050 volunteers from various companies to feed hungry South Africans.

From packing food hampers, making thousands of sandwiches, to assembling FoodBank SA’s Quick Meal, collecting food and providing operational assistance, such as supplying forklifts to move heavy pallets of food around, each person involved was committed to making their 67 minutes count.

Sandwiches were distributed on the day, while the food hampers and the FoodBank SA Quick Meal will be donated to organisations like homes for the aged, shelters for abused women and children and orphanages over the next few weeks.

Staff from the following companies were extremely generous and helpful on Mandela Day.

  • Old Mutual
  • Macsteel
  • Native VML
  • The Point Mall
  • SA Litho Lable Printers
  • Blue Bottle Liquors
  • XL Millennium Travel
  • Clickatell
  • JWT
  • Hero
  • Spark ATM Systems
  • IDS Fund Services
  • Fruit and Veg City / Food Lover’s Market

FoodBank SA would also like to thank photographers Peter Herring from PHocus Photography and Karin Coe for dedicating their 67 minutes to capturing Mandela Day activities.

“We wish to thank all sponsors for their support, which not only directly benefits thousands of people, but also creates much needed awareness of the work that we do. FoodBank SA works to address the problem of food insecurity in South Africa and with more companies getting involved, we will surely be able to make a much bigger impact”, said Kate Hamilton, FoodBank SA Fund Development Manager.
