South Africa is one of the few countries that produces enough food to meet the needs of its people, however one third of all food produced ends up in landfills, while more than 13.8 million people are hungry.
FoodBank SA collects excess food from major retailers and manufacturers, and distributes this food to over 550 beneficiary organisations who in turn provide meals and community services to more than 140,000 people.
To highlight the plight of more than 13.8 million South Africans who go hungry every day, FoodBank SA is calling on the public to take part in their third annual fast from 09:00 to 17:00 on Friday, 27 May – the day before World Hunger Day. The aim of the fast is to give the public a better understanding of the impact of hunger, even if it is only for eight hours. To register, make a donation of R35. This donation will facilitate the provision of food for one person for a month.

The key to safe fasting is to keep hydrated throughout the day and should you be struggling with the effects of fasting, such as headaches, dizziness and low blood pressure, stop immediately and have a healthy meal.
