Surviving Back-to-School Season with: A Fresh New Way of Giving

The start of a new school year can be an expensive time for parents — the cost of stationery, backpacks, electronics, and of course the season’s “must-have” sneakers really adds up.

Most parents look for ways to save on back to school items, but consider those less fortunate who may be having a hard time simply putting food on the table.

How you can help FoodBank SA make a difference

When you’re out shopping for your child’s back-to-school items, consider some of the ways you might be able to make February a little easier for struggling parents and their children.

You can do this by hosting a food drive amongst your friends or at your workplace and get your colleagues involved. When at your favourite supermarket purchase a few extra items and donate them to FoodBank SA.

The most needed food items include:

  • Rice, maize meal, samp and pasta
  • Dried beans, lentils, tinned fish, soya mince, milk powder and peanut butter
  • Canned fruit and canned mix vegetables
  • Cooking oil, salt and sugar

This is also a great opportunity to get your children involved, to educate them about the impact of hunger and food waste in South Africa and how they can make a difference. Ask them to help select items they think are best, then bring them along when you drop off the donation.

You can also involve their school by talking to your child’s teacher and other parents about organising a food drive. It’s a great way to make a significant contribution while getting the children involved in giving back.
